Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist?

A pelvic floor physical therapist is a specialized provider who has advanced training in the evaluation and treatment of the pelvic floor within a larger body system. Pelvic floor physical therapists are highly specialized providers who evaluate and treat the following conditions: bladder dysfunction, bowel dysfunction, pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, birth and pregnancy related dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.

What Should I Expect During My First Appointment with a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist?

Your pelvic floor physical therapist will begin by taking a comprehensive medical history and discussing your symptoms in detail. You will receive an educational overview of the pelvic floor anatomy and its connection to your symptoms. Following this discussion, an evaluation will be conducted, which may include observing your breathing patterns, assessing spinal and hip mobility, examining foot and ankle mobility, and performing a functional movement screening. With your consent, your physical therapist may recommend an external and/or internal pelvic floor muscle assessment to gain a deeper understanding of how the pelvic floor may be contributing to your symptoms. Together, you and your therapist will develop a personalized plan of care tailored to your specific goals and needs.

What Does a Typical Plan of Care Look Like?

Pelvic floor physical therapy is not a "quick fix". While most people begin to notice improvements within the first few sessions, our goal is not only to alleviate symptoms initially, but also to address the root cause to prevent recurrence. The pelvic floor is incredibly complex, meaning that symptoms are often influenced by more than just the pelvic floor itself; the rest of the body plays a crucial role in the symptoms you may be experiencing. Given the pelvic floor's responsibility for numerous functions, it's essential not to "short change" treatment by focusing solely on the pelvis.

Our typical treatment plan includes approximately 8-12 visits over the course of 3-4 months to achieve the long-term results you are looking for. Our clients are given homework in between appointments and have access to their provider for any questions or to share wins along the way.

Many of our clients continue to see us on a monthly basis after completing the initial plan of care to work on functional goals, such as returning to higher-level activities, training for a half marathon they once thought impossible, or pursuing lifting goals.

Do I need a Physician Referral To See You?

No, in the state of Massachusetts we have "direct access" which means you do not need a physician’s referral. We are always happy to partner with your other healthcare providers. If you do have a physician’s referral, you can bring it to your first appointment.

Why is Renew Health out-of-network?

By choosing Renew Health, you're prioritizing your pelvic health with a team of dedicated specialists who have the freedom to provide the highest standard of care, unrestricted by the limitations often imposed by in-network arrangements. Our commitment to excellence means putting your health and well-being first, every step of the way - without insurance companies dictating how we work with you. We work for our patients, not for insurance companies. Our approach addresses root causes rather than just managing symptoms, often leading to more sustainable health improvements and long-term cost savings.

Here are a few of the many benefits you will receive when working with an out-of-network provider:

  1. IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO CARE: Unlike many in-network providers with long wait times (4-8 months), we can offer timely appointments, crucial for addressing pelvic health concerns. Our multi-clinician team can get you started in a week or two in most cases. Starting your care sooner can set you on the path to symptom relief even before in-network clinics schedule your evaluation. This proactive approach helps you begin your journey to wellness without unnecessary delays.

  2. EXPERTISE-DRIVEN CARE: Our specialists can apply their full range of knowledge and skills without being limited by insurance-approved codes or treatments, leading to more innovative and effective long-term solutions.

  3. ACCESS TO YOUR PROVIDER: We provide focused, one-on-one care during each session, unlike some in-network practices that may see multiple patients simultaneously. You will never be double or triple booked. You will also have access to your provider in between sessions. Here, we are a team.

  4. FREEDOM FROM ARBITRARY LIMITS: We're not restricted by insurance-imposed session limits or treatment "codes", allowing us to provide care for you to achieve optimal results and reach your goals.

Can I Submit for Reimbursement?

You may be able to receive reimbursement from your insurance company based on your “out-of-network” benefits. We will be happy to provide you with a superbill which is an itemized document that has all of the necessary information to submit to your insurance company. Seeking and obtaining reimbursement for services is the sole responsibility of the patient, though, we are here to provide assistance.

The Difference Between Out-of-Network 🟢 vs. In-Network Coverage 🔴

🟢 Access to highly specialized practitioners with advanced training and skillset. 100% of caseload is pelvic health.

🔴 May have varying levels of expertise among providers. Some in-network providers primarily focus on orthopedic cases, with pelvic health treatment being a smaller part of their practice.

🟢 Typically longer sessions 60-90 minutes, allowing for in-depth treatment. Always 1:1 with PT. Telehealth often available.

🔴 Sessions may be shorter due to insurance constraints, typically 25-45 minutes. May not be 1:1 with PT.

🟢 Holistic approach, focusing on root causes and overall wellness.

🔴 May prioritize symptom management over long-term solutions.

🟢 Clear upfront pricing, no hidden fees.

🔴 Co-pays, high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses can vary widely. Often associated with a "surprise bill" months later.

🟢 More likely to incorporate comprehensive care strategies, including lifestyle and preventive measures.

🔴 May focus primarily on specific issues related to insurance coverage and what will be approved, such as kegels and biofeedback.

🟢 Patients have more control over their treatment choices.

🔴 Treatment options may be restricted by insurance policies.

🟢 More direct communication with the therapist, fostering rapport and building a relationship long-term.

🔴 May involve more administrative hurdles and less personal interaction.

🟢 Access to your provider in between appointments as a resource and an accountability partner.

🔴 Discussions/questions happen during appointment time.

Our job is to fill in the gaps and give you real, solution-based answers.
